Why Helotes roofs see so much hail

The severe storms that hit the San Antonio area typically form along the Balcones Escarpment to the northwest and track southeast across the metro. Helotes and the neighbouring Northwest Side — Alamo Ranch, the Dominion, Leon Valley, the Medical Center — are the first developed areas under that path, and over the past decade this corridor has taken some of the most damaging hail in the region. The terrain adds to it. Homes on the hillside lots along Scenic Loop and toward Government Canyon face west and northwest, straight into the approaching storm, and the wind that arrives with the hail has been accelerating across open ranch land.
