What To Know Before You Re-Roof In San Antonio
A roof in San Antonio takes more abuse than most: spring hail and straight-line wind off the Hill Country, then months of summer heat, then the next front. The damage rarely announces itself — granules piling at the bottom of a downspout, a lifted tab you can only see from the street, a ceiling stain that grows every time it rains. Left alone, water finds the decking, the insulation, and eventually the walls. Caught early, it is often a repair instead of a replacement.
Signs your roof needs attention
Curling, cracked, or missing shingles. Granules collecting in your gutters. Rusted or lifted flashing at the chimney and vents. Daylight in the attic. Ceiling stains upstairs — and if a leak has already stained one, we handle the drywall and paint repair too. After any hail event in Bexar or Kendall County, get it looked at even if it looks fine from the ground; hail bruises are hard to spot without walking the roof.
Metal or architectural shingle?
Both are good roofs here when installed correctly. Architectural asphalt shingles are the most common choice in San Antonio and Boerne: lower up-front cost, more colors, faster installation, easy to repair one section at a time. Standing-seam metal costs more up front but sheds hail and wind better, reflects more summer sun, and generally outlasts asphalt. If hail is your main worry, ask your insurance agent whether impact-rated shingles change anything on your policy. We install both and will tell you plainly which fits your house, your budget, and how long you plan to stay.

Hail damage and your insurance claim
Most Texas homeowners policies cover sudden storm damage like hail and wind, not wear and age. The process usually runs: document the damage, file with your carrier, meet the adjuster on site, receive the carrier's scope, then complete the work against it. Where it goes wrong is the scope — a partial approval when the whole roof was hit, or missed decking and ventilation items. We meet the adjuster at your house, walk them through our photos, and handle the back-and-forth so the approved work matches what the roof needs. In Texas a contractor cannot waive or absorb your deductible; treat any offer to do so as a warning sign.
Questions San Antonio Homeowners Ask
Straight answers on hail, insurance, materials, and what to expect from a roof replacement.
Does homeowners insurance cover hail damage to a roof in Texas?
Most Texas homeowners policies cover sudden storm damage such as hail and wind, but not wear or age — your policy language governs. The process usually runs: document the damage, file the claim, meet the adjuster, receive the carrier's scope, then complete the work against it. Your deductible is your responsibility. We inspect first and tell you honestly whether it looks like storm damage before you decide to file.
How long does a roof replacement take?
It depends on roof size and pitch, how many layers come off, how much decking needs replacing, shingle versus metal, and the weather — a crew will not open a roof with rain in the forecast. On insurance jobs the carrier's approval matters as much as the install. We give you a realistic window after walking your roof, not a number over the phone.
Metal or shingle — which is better for a San Antonio roof?
Both work here when installed correctly. Architectural shingles cost less up front, install faster, and are simple to repair in sections. Standing-seam metal costs more but sheds hail and wind better, reflects summer heat, and generally outlasts asphalt. As a GAF Certified and Owens Corning Preferred contractor we install both.
How do I know if my roof has hail damage?
From the ground, look for dented gutters, downspouts, or AC fins, granules at the bottom of downspouts, and shingle tabs that look bruised or bare. Damage on the roof surface is hard to confirm without walking it, and it does not always leak right away. Have it inspected even if it looks fine from the driveway.
Can you repair my roof instead of replacing it?
Often, yes. A lifted tab, a failed pipe boot, or cracked chimney flashing can usually be repaired if the rest of the roof is sound. Replacement makes more sense when damage spans several slopes, the shingles are near the end of their life, or the decking is compromised. We show you the photos either way.
What happens if it rains in the middle of my roof replacement?
Tear-off is staged so exposed decking is dried-in before the crew leaves for the day. If weather moves in unexpectedly, the exposed deck is covered with underlayment or tarps until it clears. Protecting the inside of your house comes before finishing on the planned day.
