South Texas is hard on the outside of a house. The sun cooks south- and west-facing walls most of the year, humidity swings from Gulf-wet to drought-dry, and hail and wind-driven rain hit the siding as well as the roof. Most exterior problems here are moisture problems in disguise: paint that peels because the caulk failed, siding that swells because the bottom edge was never sealed, a ceiling stain that is really a roof leak. Fix the water first, then the finish.
Siding: what works here
Fiber cement is the workhorse of San Antonio and Boerne exteriors: it does not burn, rot, or feed termites, holds paint well, and takes hail better than vinyl. Vinyl is the lowest-cost option and never needs paint, but it can crack in hail and warp on a west wall in August. Wood and engineered wood look right on Hill Country homes but only last with disciplined painting and sealing. Whichever you choose, the house wrap and flashing underneath are what keep water out of the wall.
Exterior painting that lasts
Paint fails at the prep, not the color. Chalking, peeling, and cracked caulk have to be washed, scraped, sanded, and primed before a topcoat means anything. We use exterior-grade products made for UV and heat, seal every joint, and follow the shade — never a blistering wall in direct afternoon sun. If the fascia or trim behind the paint is soft, we replace it first; painting over rot only hides it until the next storm.
Drywall, decks, and interior repairs
A brown ring on a ceiling or tape lifting at a corner usually means water got in from above — a roof leak, a failed flashing, or a gutter overflowing back under the shingles. We find the source first, then cut out the damaged board, dry the cavity, hang new drywall, tape, float, texture to match, and paint. Outside, pressure-treated pine makes a good deck with regular sealing; composite costs more but does not splinter or grey in the Texas sun. The footings and the ledger flashing against the house decide whether it lasts.
